Satellite view of the extent of flooding in 1993 where the Illinois and Missouri Rivers join the Mississippi. Light blue is 1993 floodwaters and dark blue is normal river flow. In the lower right, a series of floodwalls built to protect St. Louis constrict the Mississippi. This bottleneck to the flow caused widespread flooding upstream, including the town of Alton, Illinois, on the east bank of the river near the right center edge of the image. Alton has a notorious history of flooding. (ITD-SRSC/RSI/SPOT Image, copyright ESA/CNES/Sygma) |
