Title: MISSISSIPPI DELTA
Caption: In this false-color satellite image of the Mississippi River delta, living vegetation appears red, sediment-laden waters are white or light blue, and deeper water is darker blue because it contains less suspended sediment. The main active distributary is the light-blue channel that starts in the top-left center and slopes toward the middle right. In the far-right center, the main distributary branches into several channels which make the shape of a "bird's foot." This shape indicates that river flow is stronger than the wave and current action in the Gulf of Mexico. Distance across the image is about 180 km (112 mi.).(LANDSAT image by U.S. Geological Survey/Courtesy of John S. Shelton)
