GABIONS STABILIZING A STREAM BANK |
| Caption: |
These gabions along the bank of the dry stream bed of Shoal Creek in Austin, Texas, are stacked baskets of metal chain-link fencing filled with rocks. They were installed to keep the stream from eroding nearby Lamar Boulevard. Their porous nature allows floodwaters and sediment to seep into the creek bank, thereby reducing the extent of flooding downstream and allowing plants to grow and partly cover the gabions. Nearly dry between rainfall events, the creek is also fed by storm sewers such as the pipe in the left center. (Robert H. Blodgett) |
