HISTORICAL MAPS OF THE VENTURA RIVER DELTA |
| Caption: |
Distributary channel and location of the RV park are shown. (a) In 1855, a small distributary channel (DC) was flowing through the future site of the RV park (dashed box) and joined the main Ventura River channel (VR) near the river's mouth. (b) By 1945, the 1855 channel had widened to flow directly to the ocean as the North Fork of the Ventura River. A second distributary was flowing through the western part of the future RV park and joined the North Fork upstream of its mouth. (c) In 1989, around the time the RV park was built, the original 1855 channel was still active as one of the major distributaries. A levee had been built on the east side of the delta to protect San Buenaventura. In the 1992 flood (arrows), the levee and earthen fill elevating the railroad and U.S. 101 acted as dams to widen the extent of flooding on the delta. (From Keller, E. A., and Capelli, M H. 1992.
