Title: EXAMPLE OF A DISCHARGE-FREQUENCY CURVE
Caption: To make a discharge-frequency graph for the Patrick River, nine years of discharge measurements in cubic meters per second (cms) were ranked (1 though 9) on the basis of the size (magnitude) of the largest flow each year. The recurrence interval, or frequency, of the largest annual flow was then calculated using the formula shown above. Data from the table on the left were then plotted on the graph on the right. The curve was then extended (extrapolated) to estimate the discharge of the 20 year flood, which was 450 cubic meters per second. (After Leopold, L. B. 1968. U.S. Geological Survey Circular 554)
