Glen Canyon Dam, just south of the Arizona-Utah state line, divides the Colorado River basin (shaded areas) in half for management purposes. Flaming Gorge Reservoir in Wyoming and Lake Powell in Utah store runoff in the Upper Basin, and Lake Mead on the Nevada- Arizona state line stores runoff in the Lower Basin. The delta, at the head of the Gulf of California, was once a large wetland area in Mexico. Today it is severely degraded because of the diversion of Colorado River water for other uses in the United States. |
