(d) Differences in arrival time and amount of shaking at three seismic stations located from 38 to 356 km (24 to 221 mi.) from the 1994 Northridge, California, earthquake. Notice that as you get farther away from the epicenter, the seismic waves take longer to reach the seismograph and the amplitude of the waves on the seismograph decreases. In general, the greater the amplitude of the waves on the seismogram, the stronger the shaking of the ground. (Modified from Southern California Earthquake Center) |
