Title: LOMA PRIETA EARTHQUAKE
Caption: Map of earth materials in the San Francisco Bay region, showing the San Andreas fault zone and the epicenter of the 1989 M 6.9 earthquake (southeast part of map). Fault zones are shown as solid and dashed red lines with the direction of relative movement indicated by arrows. The most severe shaking was on the muddy bay shore (bright orange) where there are natural deposits of mud and the bay has been filled in to create new land. Shaking caused the collapse of the Nimitz Freeway in Oakland and damage to buildings in the Marina district of San Francisco (northwest part of map). (Modified after T. Hall from U.S. Geological Survey)
