| Caption: | The large mountain in the top center is Mt. Unzen, one of Japan's 19 active volcanoes. Dormant for over 2 centuries until 1991, the volcano threatens parts of Fukae Town and Shimabara City in the foreground. In the 1991 eruption, searing hot pyroclastic flows killed 43 and burned a school and over 600 homes. This 1993 aerial photograph shows a channel constructed to divert flows to the sea. (© Michael S.
