PYROCLASTIC FLOW FROM MT. UNZEN |
| Caption: |
The gray cloud on the forested slope of Mt. Unzen at the top of the photo is moving rapidly downslope toward a village in the June 1991 eruption. The cloud is a pyroclastic flow of extremely hot gases, volcanic ash, and large rocks. Both the firefighters in the truck and the individual firefighter are running for their lives. Fortunately the flow stopped before reaching both the firefighters and the village. (AP Wide World Photos) |
