| Title: | MOUNT VESUVIUS THREATENS NAPLES |
| Caption: | Shown here is the last eruption of Mount Vesuvius, one of three active volcanoes close to Naples, Italy. This February 1944 eruption has been followed by an unusually long period of quiet. Even more dangerous is Campi Flegrei volcano to the west of Naples, which has had the largest volcanic eruption in Mediterranean history. Today over 3 million people live in volcanic areas surrounding the Bay of Naples and 1 million people live on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. (Keystone/Getty Images) |
