| Caption: | Steam and volcanic gases rise from cooling lava being added a dome in Mount St. Helens' crater. Growth of this dome occurred from 1980 to 1986 and began again in 2004. Heat from the new growth on the dome melts snowfall. The opening in the crater wall on the lower right is where the avalanche and lateral blast occurred in 1980 (Figure 4.31).
