Title: VOLCANO TEMPORARILY COOLS GLOBAL CLIMATE
Caption: An eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991, shown here, ejected vast amounts of volcanic ash and sulfur dioxide up to about 30 km (19 mi.) into the atmosphere. Extremely fine particles, called aerosols, from the eruption remained in the upper atmosphere and circled the Earth for over a year. This aerosol cloud temporarily lowered the average global temperature. The Mt. Pinatubo eruption was the second largest in the twentieth century. (D. Harlow/U.S. Geological Survey, Denver)
