Storm waves ripped this oil drilling platform, the Ocean Warwick, from its anchorage offshore Louisiana and carried it 106 km (66 mi.) to Dauphin Island south of Mobile, Alabama. The accompanying storm surge cut the barrier island in half and destroyed over half the houses. Overwash pushed most of the sand into Mississippi Sound in the distance. Although Dauphin Island was flooded by storm surges from Hurricanes Lili (2002), Ivan (2004), Dennis (2005), and Katrina (2005), some homeowners want to rebuild.
