TROPICAL DISTURBANCE OVER PUERTO RICO |
| Caption: |
Tropical disturbances develop as waves or "kinks" in the trade winds as they blow from the east off of the African coast. Also called "easterly waves," these disturbances are persistent clusters of thunderstorms associated with a low-pressure trough. Flow lines of the winds shown by the blue arrows converge on the east side of the disturbance and diverge on the west side. (After Robert Simmon, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center) |
