Title: "HOT TOWERS" IN HURRICANE KATRINA
Caption: NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite spotted a pair of extremely tall thunderstorms in the eyewall and outer rain band of Hurricane Katrina shortly before it intensified to Category 5. Referred to as "hot towers," these clouds were more than 15,000 m (50,000 ft.) high. Like cylinders in an engine, these towers release huge amounts of heat and contribute to the rising winds in the storm. Detection of hot towers may help predict changes in hurricane intensity.
