| Title: | FEATURES OF AN EXTRATROPICAL CYCLONE |
| Caption: | This NASA Geostationary Observational Environmental Satellite (GOES) image shows the comma-shaped cloud pattern of a mature extratropical cyclone moving across the eastern United States. Clouds in the comma head are formed by counterclockwise circulation of cold air around the cyclone. Sinking dry air behind a cold front forms the dry slot. The comma tail is created by thunderstorms and other clouds ahead of the cold front. (Courtesy John Jensenius/National Weather Service) |
