HATTERAS ISLAND BREACHED BY HURRICANE ISABEL STORM SURGE |
| Caption: |
Three channels, totaling 500 m (550 yards) in width, were cut through Hatteras Island, North Carolina, by Category 2 Hurricane Isabel in September 2003. The breach, located close to where the eyewall crossed the island, is just west of Cape Hatteras. These washover channels were created by a 2.3 m (7.7 ft.) storm surge in the right forward quadrant of the storm. (Courtesy U.S. Geological Survey) |
