The most destructive extratropical cyclone in Oregon and Washington history came ashore on Columbus Day 1962 and destroyed the Campbell Hall Tower at Western Oregon State College in Monmouth, Oregon. Winds gusted to 187 km (116 mi.) per hour in Portland, 204 km (127 mi.) per hour in Corvallis, and 222 km (138 mi.) per hour in Newport, Oregon. Forty-six people died in the storm.
