Difference between the daytime temperature of the land surface in July 2003 and the cooler, more normal temperatures of July 2001. Temperatures were measured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite. The dark red areas were at least 10°C (18°F) hotter in 2003 than in 2001.
